Greetings, Colleagues!
Did you know you’ll spend about a third of your life sleeping? At least, that’s the goal, but for many of us - and our clients - adequate sleep is elusive. We live in a stimulating world with increasing demands on our time. Our window for sleep is narrower, and it’s harder than ever to decompress.
Sleep is one of the most vital pillars of health, yet it’s often overlooked. The truth is, many of us, especially kids and teens, aren’t getting nearly enough rest. We’ve seen the impacts of that in the high rates of anxiety and depression in the populations we serve.
I recently featured a two part series on sleep on the Practical Psych podcast, and I am hoping this free resource can be helpful for you or your clients.
In Part 1, Unlocking the Power of Sleep, I spoke with Dr. Cara Palmer, a psychologist and sleep expert from Montana State University. We dive in to the following:
🌙 The science of sleep: What’s really happening in your brain and body?
💤 Why sleep matters: How it shapes your physical and emotional health.
🚫 The barriers to good sleep: What’s stealing your Zzz’s—and how to fight back.
💤Protecting young sleepers: Why kids and teens need sleep more than ever, and how parents can help.
In Part 2 - Better Nights Ahead! - I discuss the proven methods we can use to treat insomnia, drawing from the essential principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). The listener will discover powerful strategies to reclaim sleep, including:
✅ Sleep Consolidation
✅ Stimulus Control
✅ Sleep Hygiene
✅ Relaxation Training
✅ Cognitive Therapy
